Jagat to Deng Trek During Manaslu Circuit Trek

Jagat to Deng

7 Oct 2026

The Jagat (1,400m) to Deng (1,860m) during the Manaslu Circuit Trek covers about 18.5 km & takes 6 to 7 hours of walking & 460m elevation gain. You go through Salleri, Sirdibas, Philim and Ekle Bhatti alongside the Budhi Gandaki River during the route. This is Day 4 in our 14-Day Manaslu Circuit Trek and Day 3 in our 10-Day Manaslu Circuit Short Trek. The elevation is low but this hike is still quite lengthy due to the distance.

When someone says ‘Manaslu Circuit’, one imagines Larkya La Pass covered in snow and Tibetan prayer flags. This is the postcard everyone likes to show. The days leading up to it are equally as important.

Larkya La Pass

One of these days is Jagat to Deng trek. You trek 18.5 km through the deep gorges of Budhi Gandaki River, Gurung villages, rice terrace and bamboo forest. According to the trail map, you only gain 460 m but your legs will tell you another story by the end of the day.

Here we take you through the day step by step. You will know which checkpoints your permits are verified at, where you have lunch, where the path of Tsum Valley branches off from, and what you can expect from the town of Deng.

Our team from Manaslu Guide conducts groups down this path throughout the year and our guides know every single bridge and tea stops on the trail. If you would like an itinerary tailored according to your own pace, then request one free Manaslu itinerary from our team now.

Are There Any Permit Checkpoints In Jagat To Deng Route?

Yes, and the first one is in Jagat itself. This is the morning the restricted section of the Manaslu region officially begins. So your permits need to be ready before you take your first step.

Permit Check at Jagat: The Entry to Manaslu Conservation Area

Jagat acts as the gateway to Manaslu Conservation Area. You will have your permits checked at Jagat after breakfast, provided that you have done everything right. The process does not take more than 10 to 20 minutes.

For your entire trekking, you will require four permits. They include Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, and Tsum Nubri Rural Municipality permit. Your guide will carry them all, so you will be enjoying some tea while the people of the village wake up.

You can find complete information about the cost and permits in our detailed guide on Manaslu Restricted Area Permit.

Second Permit Checkpoint at Philim

A little further up the trail, your guide will need to present the permits once again near Philim. This route has checkpoints that check for permits, and the procedure is fast and smooth. Don’t be surprised if you have to undergo the procedure twice. It is quite common and helps ensure the safety of the region.

Do You Need a Guide for the Jagat to Deng Section?

Yes. Manaslu is a restricted region, and according to the rules in Nepal, it is mandatory to travel with a licensed guide of a registered agency.

The good news is that starting from 22nd March 2026, Nepalese regulations do not need two people to travel with a restricted area permit anymore. Therefore, you can plan this trek all by yourself.

Jagat to Deng Route Breakdown

The entire day’s journey is along the Budhi Gandaki River in a northerly direction through the valley either it be in Manaslu Circuit short trek or the standard one. Crossing the river using hanging bridges will be part of your adventure. The same case applies to the path that keeps on changing every few hours.

Manaslu Circuit Short Trek

Jagat to Salleri and Sirdibas

You can leave Jagat following stone trails that have prayer wheels alongside them. Take a few turns as you go past these wheels since locals always do it every morning.

From here, it’s just a matter of going across a suspension bridge to Salleri and then to Sirdibas. The trail is relatively flat for a change from the strenuous ascent done the previous day in Machha Khola. In the early mornings, look into the valley and you will spot the first snowy mountain range in your trekking path, the Siringi Himal (7,161 m).

But there is something you need to be aware of. Some sections of this part of the trek are now along dusty jeeps because the road construction has extended further up the valley.

Sirdibas to Philim

Following from Sirdibas, you have to wade the Budhi Gandaki river again. After walking for an hour or so, you finally come across Philim, a sizable Gurung village, at a height of approximately 1,570 m.

Philim is a typical village. You get to watch children on their way to school, women farming in the millet field, and elders socializing outside their houses. You can easily spot chortens and prayer flags around the village perimeter.

This is your lunch stop, where you get to smell the delicious dal bhat and potato chips before you actually sit down to eat. It would be good if you eat a lot since the afternoon stretch is longer than expected.

Ekle Bhatti to Nayapul

The trail moves north past fields of millet crops and ends at Ekle Bhatti. Ekle Bhatti is a tiny place with some lodges for accommodation and a tea shop. Make sure to rest and fill up on drinking water at this spot.

You then hike to Nayapul, meaning “new bridge.” Nayapul is the point where the route to the Tsum valley branches off from the Manaslu circuit route. The guide will take the left path towards Nyak and Deng.

Most of the trekkers aren’t aware how near the Tsum valley trek is to the circuit. It’s just one turn from here. In case you have more time, our Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek will combine both.

Nyak Phedi, Pewa and the Final Walk to Deng

The final leg of the trip is probably the most exciting part of the entire day. The gorge becomes narrower, the cliffs become steeper, and the river becomes noisier. You walk through a bamboo and pine forest, enjoying the cooler temperature under the shadow of the trees.

Pewa marks the final point where you can have your daily tea before you reach Deng, which lies approximately 45 minutes from Pewa. You cross some additional suspension bridges, go up a final short hill, and arrive in the village.

After around six to seven hours of trekking, seeing the lodge marks the end of your journey and the beginning of relaxation time when you take off your boots, hold a warm beverage, and await dinner.

Major Location Highlights During Jagat to Deng Route

Many trekkers expect this to be a simple walking day. It is not. Within a few hours, you go from a stone trading village to a deep river canyon. Here are the places worth slowing down for:

  • Jagat village: Flagstone streets and old stone houses. Jagat was once a toll stop on the salt trade route to Tibet, which is where the name comes from. “Jagat” means tax.
  • Siringi Himal near Sirdibas: Your first real snow peak of the trek. It is clearest early in the morning before the clouds build.
  • Philim: A busy Gurung village with millet terraces, chortens and a strong local feel. It is also the best lunch stop of the day.
  • Nayapul junction: One trail leads to the Tsum Valley and the other to Manaslu. It is worth stopping for a minute to take it in.
  • The gorge after Ekle Bhatti: Waterfalls drop straight off the cliffs into the river. In autumn, the water runs a cold grey-blue.
  • Suspension bridges: You cross several today. Some sway more than others, so hold the cable and keep a steady pace.
  • Gray langurs: These long-tailed monkeys often move through the trees in the lower gorge. Keep your camera ready and your voice low.

Each of these places gives you a reason to pause. And pausing is part of the plan, because a steady pace gets you to Deng with energy left.

Jagat to Deng Distance

The total distance is about 18.5 km. This makes it one of the longer walking days on the whole circuit, even though you stay below 2,000 m. Here is how the day usually breaks down for our groups. Times are approximate and depend on your pace and how long you stop.

SectionApprox. TimeTrail TypeWhat You Will See
Jagat to Salleri and Sirdibas1.5 to 2 hrsMostly flat, partly jeep roadSiringi Himal views, river bridges
Sirdibas to PhilimAbout 1 hrGentle climbGurung village, farm terraces
Philim to Ekle Bhatti and Nayapul1 to 1.5 hrsRolling trailMillet fields, Tsum junction
Nayapul to Nyak, Pewa and Deng2 to 2.5 hrsUps and downs in the gorgeWaterfalls, forest, bridges

Add about an hour for lunch in Philim and a few tea breaks. Most trekkers leave Jagat around 7:30 am and reach Deng by mid-afternoon.

Our schedule calls for six to seven hours of hiking time. But there have been times when others took about eight hours and that is just okay.

This usually happens because of three reasons. First is your speed while climbing. Second is the number of stops you make for pictures. Third is the heat in the lower gorge during the day because the rock walls tend to hold the sun and no breeze.

So start early. One decision will help you gain an hour on the hike.

Jagat to Deng Elevation Gain

Starting from 1,400 m in Jagat and reaching 1,860 m in Deng, the net ascent in elevation is 460 m.

However, the trail does not ascend in a linear way but descends to bridges, ascends, and repeats that a number of times. In many cases, some trekkers have had an accumulated ascent of almost 900 m for the whole day as indicated in their GPS data.

This is why the day appears to be harder than what you might think. However, altitude sickness is extremely unlikely to happen at this elevation. You are pushing yourself but oxygen is still not an issue.

Think of this day as a preparation one. Each ascent here will make your subsequent ascent in the high regions past Namrung much easier on your legs. And today, you camp in elevation where most people sleep comfortably.

How Hard Is the Jagat to Deng Trek?

The Jagat to Deng trek is moderate, with a long distance. You do not need any technical skills. However, you do need good basic fitness and a steady pace.

Long Distance, Low Altitude

Distance, not altitude, is the problem. It’s a whole day walking 18.5 km in any of the mountains. Loose rocks, stone steps, the heat of the afternoon and a steep-sided valley will show up in your legs.

We hear the same thing from our guides. Trekkers who walk too quickly in the morning find things hard in the afternoon. Those who walk steadily from the beginning reach the end strongly.

How Jagat to Deng Compares to the Days Before and After

Here is how the Jagat to Deng day compares with the days around it on our 14-day itinerary.

DayRouteDistanceWalking TimeSleeping Altitude
Day 3Machha Khola to Jagat17.4 km7 to 8 hrs1,400 m
Day 4Jagat to Deng18.5 km6 to 7 hrs1,860 m
Day 5Deng to Namrung17 km5 to 6 hrs2,630 m

The fourth day is the longest in terms of distance among the three days. Nonetheless, it takes less time than the third day because of the flat terrain in the vicinity of Sirdibas, which allows moving quickly. By the end of the day, your body has normally acquired the rhythm of walking.

We have guided trekkers of all ages from 16 to 67 on this path. You can do it as well at a reasonable pace with a guide.

Deng Village: Teahouses, Food and Where You Sleep

This is a tiny village. It only consists of a couple of teahouses run by families on a slope above the river, and nothing much else. Coming after some other busy villages downstream, the serenity here is quite refreshing.

There will be twin-bedded rooms with mattresses, blankets and bathrooms which are clean and basic. You can read more about this in our article on Manaslu trek accommodation.

Manaslu Trek Accommodation Hotels

Dal bhat, noodle soup, fried rice, and Tibetan bread are some of the items commonly served as the dinner food items at the teahouses. Our suggestion for you would be to choose Dal Bhat as the refills of rice and lentil soup are free, which will keep you full for the next day’s climb.

Take money with you because the ATM facility is available at Arughat. Carry Nepali rupees so that you have money to drink and eat snacks, charge, and have hot showers, 15-25 should be fine.

This is the place where you will feel the change in culture. Below Deng, all villages are Gurung and Magar. Beyond it, you will enter the Nubri region, following the Tibetan Buddhism culture. Mani walls will appear for the first time tomorrow on the trail.

The evenings in the gorge are calm, with only the noise of the river. You will sit next to the stove drinking ginger tea and reflecting upon the day that you had.
